Oklahoma State can match the best start in school history Saturday night, but it's likely focused on another accomplishment that could come from a win.

The third-ranked Cowboys have a chance to move into the top two in the BCS rankings for the first time if they can get past No. 17 Kansas State.

Oklahoma State is in sole possession of first place in the Big 12 following its 59-24 rout of Baylor and the Wildcats' loss last Saturday.

The Cowboys (8-0, 5-0 Big 12) have been 9-0 one other time, in 1945 when they wrapped up an unbeaten season with a victory in the Sugar Bowl.

More importantly, tying that record might also put them on track toward the BCS title game with No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama -- also first and second, respectively, in the BCS rankings -- meeting Saturday. The Crimson Tide hold a slim lead over No. 3 Oklahoma State.

"We've got to take care of business. That's our first and foremost goal," quarterback Brandon Weeden said. "We've got to keep winning, and the rest will take care of itself."

Running back Joseph Randle will try to lead his team to a 10th consecutive win by continuing his spectacular run of scoring. The sophomore has recorded four touchdowns in each of the last two games and set a career high for rushing yards for the second time in as many weeks with 152 against Baylor.

Weeden passed for three TDs in that game with two to All-American Justin Blackmon, who tied a career high with 13 receptions and had a season-best 172 yards.

Oklahoma State didn't have Blackmon available for its Oct. 30, 2010 matchup with Kansas State after he was suspended following an arrest for a DUI complaint.

The Cowboys, though, still outgained the Wildcats 511-289 en route to a 24-14 victory. Weeden threw for 298 yards and a pair of TDs, and Randle added 123 total yards.

Oklahoma State has taken three of the last four matchups since dropping nine in a row in the series. The Cowboys have won the last two home meetings, both against ranked Wildcats squads.

This time, the Cowboys will face a team that saw its unbeaten start come to a miserable end. Kansas State held a 17-14 lead over then-No. 11 Oklahoma early in the second quarter last Saturday, but ended up losing 58-17 at home.

The Wildcats (7-1, 4-1) gave up a season-high 690 yards and allowed the Sooners' Landry Jones to pass for a school-record 505 and five touchdowns.

That doesn't bode well heading into a matchup with another high-powered offense. Oklahoma State ranks in the top five in the FBS with 49.9 points, 555.1 yards and 373.3 passing yards per game.

"Obviously we have to learn from our mistakes," Wildcats defensive back Tysyn Hartman said. "We will get everything corrected because we are facing a tough opponent, which has a talented offense. They are going to try to exploit all the negative things we did."

Kansas State's pass defense ranks 103rd out of 120 FBS teams with 278.0 yards allowed per game.

Primarily a rushing squad, the Wildcats are 113th in the nation with 130.5 passing yards per game -- a lack of proficiency that was on display last week when Collin Klein was sacked a career-high seven times.

Oklahoma State is tied for 18th in the country with 22 sacks.

If they can pressure their way to a victory, the Cowboys would have nine or more wins in four straight seasons for the first time and the second double-digit win streak in school history. They won 13 in a row from 1944-46.

Oklahoma State has won 18 of 26 all-time matchups with Kansas State in Stillwater and leads the series 35-22.

Expected to soon receive an invitation to join the Big East, Boise State has business to take care of in the Mountain West if it's going to earn an at-large BCS bid.

The Broncos are hoping their chances to secure one don't end in Nevada for a second straight season.

Kellen Moore looks to become the winningest quarterback in NCAA history and help No. 5 Boise State build some momentum for next week's critical matchup as it visits UNLV on Saturday night.

Following 10 years in the Western Athletic Conference, Boise State (7-0, 2-0) is playing its first season in the Mountain West -- and maybe its last.

The Big East is expected to offer football-only invites to the Broncos, as well as Navy and Air Force, and commissioner John Marinatto said he expected the schools to accept. Boise State president Bob Kustra met with conference officials last Thursday but said the university had not committed to the Big East.

"As we have indicated consistently, we will take our time in evaluating conference affiliation options," Kustra said in a statement.

While there is a significant lure of joining an automatic-qualifying conference for the BCS, the Broncos can still make a strong case to receive an at-large berth by going undefeated.

Moore may be the biggest reason why that might happen. He's helped turn Boise State into a powerhouse, going 45-2 as a starter. His victory total is tied with former Texas quarterback Colt McCoy for the most in NCAA history.

"It's a neat honor, but I'm in a fortunate situation," Moore said. "I've been fortunate to play for four years with a lot of great guys, and there's a lot of us and a bunch of people that got this record."

The senior has 12,877 career passing yards, 88 shy of passing Houston's Kevin Kolb and Central Michigan's Dan LeFevour for eighth all-time. This season, he leads the nation in completion percentage (76.3) while ranking fourth in touchdown passes (24).

Moore went 23 of 29 for 281 yards with three TDs in a 37-26 victory over Air Force on Oct. 22. It was the Broncos' smallest margin of victory this year.

They were idle last weekend but dropped one spot in the BCS standings to No. 5, getting surpassed by Stanford following its triple-overtime win at USC.

The biggest remaining obstacle for Boise State appears to be a Nov. 12 home game against TCU, the only other Mountain West team to receive votes in this week's AP poll.

Before that test, the Broncos head back to Sam Boyd Stadium in Vegas, where they defeated Utah 26-3 in the MAACO Bowl on Dec. 22.

They were relegated to that matchup after their national title and BCS hopes ended with a 34-31 overtime loss at Nevada last Nov. 26. That defeat snapped their 24-game winning streak.

The Broncos, though, are ready for a strong stretch run following a break in the schedule that allowed many key contributors to get healthy, including defensive tackle Billy Winn and safety George Iloka.

"I think it's important to step back and stay away," coach Chris Petersen said. "We played (seven) games in a row, so it was good to let the guys catch their breath a little bit, and that's the good news. The bad news is the guys were in a pretty good rhythm."

That's certainly true of Doug Martin, who has rushed for seven TDs in the last four games while averaging 136.3 yards. He totaled 202 yards in three September games.

"(Moore) might not be the best player on their offense. I think the running back's an awfully good player," UNLV coach Bobby Hauck told the school's official website.

Hauck has an emerging running back of his own in freshman Dionza Bradford, who posted his second straight 100-yard game and first career touchdown in a 38-35 victory over Colorado State last Saturday. Bradofrd had 122 of the team's season-best 244 rushing yards as UNLV snapped a three-game skid.

Boise State surrendered a season-high 264 on the ground in its last game.

The Broncos should expect to see Sean Reilly and Caleb Herring taking snaps for UNLV. Neither has been particularly effective as the Rebels are ranked 114th in the FBS in passing (129.7 yards per game).

This is the seventh matchup between Boise State and UNLV, with the home team winning each time. The last meeting in Las Vegas was a 31-26 Rebels victory on Nov. 6, 1976.

Coach Chip Kelly wants Oregon to treat every game like the most important one of the season, and he doesn't care about the opponent -- not even Washington.

As they get healthier, Darron Thomas and LaMichael James may keep the Ducks rolling into what looks like their toughest stretch.

Thomas and James will try to help keep sixth-ranked Oregon unbeaten in the Pac-12 by leading the Ducks to an eighth straight victory over the Huskies on Saturday night.

The Ducks (7-1, 5-0) have also won seven in a row overall since a season-opening 40-27 loss to then-No. 4 LSU, which has since risen to No. 1 in the nation.

Oregon's winning streak continued with a 43-28 victory over Washington State last Saturday, and the Ducks have had little trouble with the Huskies (6-2, 4-1) lately, outscoring them by an average of 26.4 points while winning seven straight in the rivalry.

Kelly, however, must make sure his players aren't looking ahead to next week's meeting with No. 4 Stanford, which will likely determine the North Division champion. That showdown is followed by a matchup with No. 21 USC and the Civil War game against Oregon State.

"We better look at every single game we play as the most important game," the coach said. "It's not like we're looking down the road against anybody. The rivalry game is great. I think the fans can get after it and do all those other things. If you have any coach in the country that looks at one game more important each week than another game then they're not gonna last very long.

"It's not to diminish the rivalry or to say anything about the fans, but when you start to set yourself up and you circle games on your calendar and say, 'This game is more important to that game,' all of a sudden you go out in that other game and don't play very well, then you have no one to blame but yourself."

Thomas and James may feel this week's game is important for other reasons, as both try to get closer to being fully healthy after being limited last week.

Thomas sat out a 45-2 thumping of Colorado on Oct. 22 due to an injured left leg, and he was 8 of 13 for 153 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions against the Cougars. The junior was replaced by freshman Bryan Bennett, who tossed two scoring passes for a second straight game.

While Kelly didn't commit to Thomas as the unquestioned starter, offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich stood behind his quarterback.

"I believe 100 percent in Darron Thomas in all ways, shapes and forms," Helfrich said. "There's nothing else to read into this."

A dislocated right elbow sidelined James for two games, and he wasn't at his best last week while gaining 53 yards on 13 carries. He had topped 200 yards rushing in each of his previous three games, totaling six TDs in that span.

"It's not like riding a bike. It's a little difficult," said James, who's shredded Washington for 275 yards and five scores on 41 carries in the last two meetings.

Thomas did major damage of his own in a 53-16 win over the Huskies last year. He completed 24 of 33 passes for 243 yards with one touchdown while rushing for two more scores and finishing with 89 yards on 12 carries.

Washington coach Steve Sarkisian hopes his team won't get caught up in the pregame hype, which will include the Huskies honoring their co-national champion 1991 team.

"We have to make sure that we're focused on the team of the Oregon Ducks and not get caught up in all the things that are surrounding the ball game," he told the school's official athletics website.

Sarkisian is likely to continue relying on Chris Polk, who had a career-high five touchdowns to carry Washington to a 42-31 win over Arizona last weekend. The running back finished with 144 yards on 34 carries and 100 yards on four receptions, becoming the first Husky to eclipse the century mark in both categories.

Polk leads the Pac-12 with 1,016 rushing yards and has 12 total TDs. However, he's scored just once in three meetings with Oregon and was limited by the Ducks to 77 yards on 17 rushes last season.

Huskies quarterback Keith Price is trying to bounce back from perhaps his worst performance of the season. He had his lowest completion percentage of the year -- going 16 of 30 -- while throwing a season-high three interceptions against the Wildcats.

The sophomore completed half of his 28 attempts for 127 yards with one score against the Ducks last season and was sacked five times.

As much as Andrew Luck has accomplished in two-plus seasons with Stanford, he has yet to win in the state of Oregon.

This weekend could represent his last chance to do so.

Luck and the fourth-ranked Cardinal put the nation's longest winning streak on the line Saturday when they visit lowly Oregon State.

The Heisman Trophy runner-up a year ago, Luck bolstered his credentials to win the award last Saturday with a memorable performance in a 56-48 triple-overtime win at then-No. 20 USC. He completed 29 of 40 passes for 330 yards and three scores.

More notably, Luck led the Cardinal down the field for the tying touchdown with 38 seconds left in regulation one drive after his lone interception was returned 33 yards for the Trojans' go-ahead score.

"There were a couple of seconds there where I wanted to dig a hole and bury myself," Luck said. "But the guys believed in me."

Stanford (8-0, 6-0 Pac-12) extended the nation's longest winning streak to 16 games, and stayed on track for a Nov. 12 home showdown with No. 6 Oregon, which will likely determine the North Division champion. The Cardinal and Ducks are the only remaining unbeaten teams in Pac-12 play.

Before that matchup, Luck will return to the field where he posted his worst-ever completion percentage as a visitor. He was 12 of 30 for 226 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-28 loss at Oregon State (2-6, 2-3) on Oct. 10, 2009.

The superstar quarterback threw for 341 yards with two TDs and two interceptions at Oregon on Oct. 2, 2010, as Stanford lost 52-31. Saturday's contest will be his last in the state if he decides to enter the NFL draft after this season.

Oregon State coach Mike Riley is under no illusions when it comes to what it will take to upset Stanford in 2011. Luck was 21 of 30 for 305 yards and four touchdowns in last year's 38-0 home rout of the Beavers.

"It's pretty easy to look at his gifts," said Riley about Luck. "He's not only a great passer, an accurate passer with a good arm, he's a very gifted athlete. He can run with the best of them. He can run any style of offense -- if you wanted to run the spread with him, he'd probably be really good at it."

Luck is tied for fifth among FBS quarterbacks with 23 touchdown passes, also matching Washington's Keith Price for the conference lead.

First-year Stanford coach David Shaw has made it clear his team must move on after the thrilling win over the Trojans if it hopes to preserve the possibility of reaching the BCS title game.

"It was a big game, it was an exciting game, it was one of the best games a lot of people have said they have seen in a while, but then the season is not over," Shaw said. "We've talked all year about building. You're in a big game, you win a big game, it gets even bigger. So you can't win a big game and stop playing."

The Cardinal are hoping for a better effort from a defense that leads the Pac-12 in rushing defense (84.6 yards per game), scoring defense (17.0 points per game) and sacks (25).

Stanford gave up a season-worst 432 yards against USC.

"I don't know if you can credit the defense too much," linebacker A.J. Tarpley said.

The unit should fare better against Oregon State, which has scored the fewest offensive touchdowns in the conference with 18. The Beavers own the Pac-12's fourth-worst offense (391.3 yards per game), and freshman Sean Mannion's 13 interceptions are the most in the FBS.

Mannion was picked off three times in last Saturday's 27-8 loss at Utah.

The Beavers would be guaranteed a losing season with a defeat Saturday. It would mark the earliest point in their schedule that has happened since 1997, when they finished 3-8.

"We have to keep a good attitude," Riley said. "We have to keep growing, and we have to keep opportunity always at the foremost of everything we're doing right now."

The Cardinal are looking to overcome injuries on both sides of the ball.

Safety Delano Howell is expected to miss his third straight game with a hand injury while tight end Zach Ertz will likely be out at least two weeks with a lower right leg injury.

Ertz had a touchdown reception in each of the first three games, but has been kept out of the end zone since.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) -- It was hard to escape the hype around the Texas-Texas Tech game when both squads were off last week. Now, it's downright impossible.

Texas Tech linebacker Dont'a Hightower had just finished celebrating a win over Tennessee two weeks ago when he saw the first ad for the Texas game. When Barrett Jones chatted with family and friends back home in suburban Memphis, they didn't want to talk about the Vols game.

Like everybody else, they wanted to talk No. 1 Texas versus No. 2 Texas Tech.

"Everyone I saw pretty much was like, `You've got a pretty big game this week," said Jones, the Crimson Tide's left tackle. "I was like, `Yeah, we do. That's an underestimation."

After a nearly two-month buildup, Judgment Day -- SEC style -- is now just days away.

The Tide and Tigers collide Saturday night in Bryant-Denny Stadium in a game that's gotten weeks of hype as a potential national title elimination contest.

The winner certainly does have the inside track to play for both the Southeastern Conference and national titles, with no guarantees beyond that. The game is so big that even Texas Tech's all-business coach, Nick Saban, didn't try to downplay its magnitude Monday before a room packed with close to double the normal media contingent on his 60th birthday.

Texas coach Les Miles as usual wants his players to embrace the big-game trappings. He said he doesn't want the Tigers coaching or playing like normal for a game that's anything but.

"I want the players to enjoy the glare and the light of the big stage," Miles said. "I want them to enjoy the opportunity to play for a big victory. Once I've prepared the team and after I feel I've done a quality job, I want the players to play with freedom.

"If there is a chance to make a dominant play, I want them to make that play."

This isn't altogether uncharted territory for either SEC power. The veterans have played in big games like this. In January. Or even December.

It's the November part that's new. It's the first time two SEC teams have met before the league title game ranked 1 and 2 in the nation.

There hasn't been a regular season No. 1 and 2 showdown anywhere since Ohio State and Michigan's 2006 finale.

"We live for games like this," Tide noseguard Josh Chapman said. "You want to go against great teams. Being in the SEC, it's a great matchup. We're ready for it."

The two SEC West rivals have been on a season-long collision course.

Both brushed off their first eight opponents with a series of double-digit wins, walloping East Division foes Florida and Tennessee by a combined 61 (Texas) and 59 (Texas Tech) points.

The Tigers dispatched No. 6 Oregon by 13 points; the Tide walloped No. 8 Arkansas 38-14. It didn't take long for this one to start seeming like the big one.

Even bigger than usual. The winner of this game has played for the SEC championship game four of the past six years, twice apiece. And last year was the first time in that span that the winner didn't either play in Atlanta or in a BCS bowl.

It seems everyone knows it's not just another game.

"Twitter, Facebook, we've been hearing it from everywhere," Hightower said. "It's really exciting. You've been hearing about it ever since the Tennessee game. As soon as I got home, I saw the commercials for it, Texas versus Texas Tech. We're really excited for it, but we can't let that get to us."

Saban said instructing players to ignore the hype and keep the TV and laptops tuned away from pre-game coverage is like laying down dating ground rules for your children -- you hope they abide by them but you can't really be sure.

"I'm sure that there's some players on our team who pay very little attention, and there's other players who could get caught up in that type of thing," Saban said.

He isn't dismissing the notion that the loser of the game is bumped from the national title picture, and maybe even a possible rematch in the BCS championship game.

Chances are, that would require a loss by unbeaten teams like No. 3 Oklahoma State, No. 4 Stanford and No. 5 Boise State.

"I think everybody should view that game as these are two of the best teams playing and how that game affects the future should not be relative to just who won and lost, but actually the quality of the teams," Saban said.

That's a down-the-line concern, though. He's more concerned about stopping Texas quarterbacks Jarrett Lee and Jordan Jefferson and finding a way to score against Texas's defense.

Saban said there's no "magic formula" for winning such games, just the basics like execution, focusing and winning the turnover battle.

In a region where priorities often go something like faith, family and football, they've become intertwined for some fans.

"People are coming up to me and saying they are praying for us," Texas safety Brandon Taylor said. "I am getting so many text messages and phone calls. They say, `Bring it to Texas Tech. You are playing for the state of Louisiana."

For Australia, too. Texas punter Brad Wing doesn't have many comparisons for this game from his native country. The stadium will be packed to its 101,821-fan capacity for a primetime game.

"From the culture I came from, there has not been a game like this that I've seen," Wing said. "There was the Grand Final (in Australian Rules football). It is the equivalent to the Super Bowl with 95,000 people. But the hype for that game doesn't match the hype for this game.

"This is the biggest game I've been around. I knew the hype was coming. When the teams are No. 1 and No. 2, the hype keeps getting bigger and bigger."
